What's Involved

Fencing built to stand for the long term

A fence is only as good as what's holding it up. The most common reason fences lean, sag or blow over is shallow posts and inadequate bracing — the above-ground work might look fine, but underneath it's a post sitting in a hole with no concrete and no depth. We see it constantly on new builds and budget jobs across Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

Every fence we build starts with properly concreted posts set at least 600mm deep, with deeper footings for taller fences and gate posts. Rails are fixed with structural connections, not just nails into end grain. Colorbond panels are braced correctly so they don't flex in wind. Timber pickets are spaced consistently and capped to shed water. Slat screens are fixed to steel or hardwood frames that won't twist. We also build feature gates, garden screens and privacy panels — the elements that turn a boundary fence into something that actually adds to the property.

FAQ

Fencing questions

How much does fencing cost per metre?
Timber picket fencing typically runs $180 to $350 per lineal metre depending on the height, style and timber species. Colorbond fencing is $90 to $160 per lineal metre. Slat screening starts from $200 per lineal metre. All prices include posts, footings, rails, materials and installation. We provide an itemised quote after measuring up on site.
What is the difference between picket, Colorbond and slat fencing?
Timber picket fencing suits period homes and heritage areas — it has a traditional look and can be built in a range of profiles and heights. Colorbond is the most cost-effective option for boundary fencing, low maintenance and available in a wide colour range. Slat screening uses timber or aluminium battens with small gaps for a modern, semi-private finish that works well as feature fencing, garden screens and privacy panels. We often combine styles — for example, Colorbond on the boundaries with timber slat screening as a feature.
Do I need council approval for a new fence?
In most cases, boundary fences up to 2 metres high at the rear and sides do not require a planning permit. Front fences are more restricted — in many Melbourne councils, front fences over 1.2 metres or in heritage overlay areas need a permit. We check the specific requirements for your property and council during the quoting process so there are no surprises, and we handle permit applications where required.
How deep are fence posts set?
We set fence posts a minimum of 600mm into the ground, concreted into a footing that is at least 200mm in diameter. For taller fences, heavier gates or exposed sites, we go deeper — typically 750mm to 900mm. Proper footings are the difference between a fence that stands straight for twenty years and one that leans within two. On Melbourne's reactive clay soils, we also allow for ground movement by using flexible post-to-rail connections where needed.
