Doncaster slopes and clay are unforgiving
Doncaster sits on a ridge that falls toward the Koonung Creek valley and the Yarra, so most blocks have a meaningful slope. To get a level lawn, patio or pool surround, you almost always need to retain — sometimes a single low wall, often a series of terraced walls. On top of the slope, the soil is highly reactive Silurian clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, moving constantly through the seasons. A wall built without respect for that movement will lean, crack or fail within a few years.
This is where our engineering background matters. We don't just stack sleepers and hope. We assess the fall, the soil and the load behind the wall, size the footings for expansive clay, install an ag-drain and free-draining backfill so water never builds up behind the wall, and bring in formal engineering certification whenever the retained height or proximity to a boundary calls for it.
