Templestowe's large, leafy blocks near the Yarra give us real scope for ambitious outdoor spaces, but the rolling terrain and reactive clay mean retaining and drainage come first. BMEL designs and builds family backyards, retaining walls, turf and gardens that make the most of Templestowe's generous block sizes and established tree character.
Templestowe is one of Manningham's most spacious suburbs — large blocks, wide streets and a leafy, semi-rural feel despite being well within Melbourne's east. The land rolls toward the Yarra River and its parklands to the north and west, so many blocks carry significant falls. Combined with the reactive clay typical of the area, that means the foundations of any good Templestowe landscape are retaining, terracing and drainage. Get those right and the generous block size becomes a real asset; get them wrong and you're left with a steep, unusable yard.
The housing stock is mostly substantial family homes from the 1970s onward, many on 800-square-metre-plus blocks, with a steady flow of renovations and rebuilds. Established trees give many streets their character and need to be worked around carefully. Our design and building qualifications mean we can assess the fall, design the levels, size and drain the retaining properly and protect the trees — turning a large, awkward block into a backyard the whole family uses.

"Our new garden for our new home. Manny and his team worked tirelessly. Quality of work is very good — impressed by this team and their enthusiasm."
Templestowe centres on the Templestowe Village along Anderson Street and James Street, with the Yarra River and Westerfolds Park forming a natural northern boundary. The suburb's larger blocks and mature gardens give it a distinctly green, settled character, and its proximity to the river parklands is part of the appeal. Streets falling toward the river carry the steepest grades and most often need retaining.
The soil is reactive clay, and blocks closer to the Yarra and its tributaries can have drainage easements and higher water tables. Knowing the terrain, the soil behaviour and the Manningham planning rules for retaining and tree protection is part of what we bring to every Templestowe project. So the finished garden is both compliant and built to last.
